3 Care Tips that You Should Consider with Watch Straps

As a timeless accessory, a watch can be a significant investment and a cherished part of your wardrobe. To ensure your timepiece looks its best for as long as possible, it is important to take care of the straps as well as the watch itself. From keeping your watch straps clean to replacing them when needed, here is a guide to taking care of them.

1. Material

First, you need to recognise the material of your strap. Is it leather, nylon or rubber? Each of these has different levels of resistance and types of care. We advise checking for signs of wear and tear monthly. Over time, the straps of your watch can become stretched or cracked due to wear and tear. If you notice any signs of damage, replace it as soon as possible. This will help ensure that your watch looks its best and that the straps won't break while you wear it.

2. Cleaning

Now that you know the type of material of your watch strap, let's see the cleaning each one needs.

Leather

Only for straps with a smooth grain, use a minimal amount of water and mild soap and allow to air dry. Once it's completed, moisturise and protect your strap with a quality leather conditioner. Be aware that heavier treatments, such as mink oil, can darken the leather, so avoid those chemicals.

Nylon

Gently combine mild soap and lukewarm water in a container and submerge your strap for a few minutes. Rub the strap between your fingers to work the soap into the fabric. Then, rinse the strap thoroughly under running water and roll it in a hand towel, lightly pressing. Last, hang the strap in a place without direct sunlight to let it dry.

Rubber

The cleaning of this material is similar to nylon. First, gently rinse the strap under warm running water. Next, apply a small amount of soft hand soap and rinse away any residual soap. Finally, allow the strap to air dry, avoiding direct sunlight.

3. Storage

Keep your watch straps clean. Oil, dirt, and sweat can accumulate over time and cause the straps to age prematurely. Regularly wiping the straps with a damp cloth can help to prevent this build-up and keep the straps looking new for longer. At Rapport, you find the best accessories designed to take care of every part of your watch collection - from the case glass to the watch strap.
